Senior Platform Engineer
Rhino
Rhino + Jetty is making housing more affordable and accessible for millions of renters every year. We recently merged Rhino and Jetty to become the leading real estate platform with a mission to improve the financial lives of renters and their property managers.
In 2024, R + J expanded its platform with end-to-end deposit management, streamlining how security deposits and insurance solutions are administered. Today, our comprehensive suite of products – including security deposit insurance, cash security deposit management, renter guarantee, renters insurance, and loss of employment insurance – continues to transform the renting experience, making moving easier, more affordable, and more transparent for all.
As a Senior Platform Engineer, you're passionate about building scalable internal platforms that reduce friction and accelerate development teams' path to production. You'll design foundational systems and self-service tooling at the intersection of infrastructure and developer experience – creating abstractions, standardizing interfaces, and implementing automation that enables confident deployments and rapid iteration. Working closely with software engineers, product managers, and leadership, you'll solve complex infrastructure challenges, establish standards, and ensure our platforms meet evolving reliability, performance, and usability needs while fostering a culture of operational excellence.
In this role, you will:
- Design and build internal developer platforms that provide self-service access to infrastructure, deployment pipelines, and common services
- Lead cross-functional platform initiatives that reduce toil, eliminate bottlenecks, and improve developer productivity across the organization
- Establish platform standards and best practices for observability, release management, security controls, and incident response
- Build and evolve cloud-native architectures with emphasis on scalability, reliability, and operational simplicity
- Mentor engineers on distributed system design, infrastructure-as-code practices, and reliability engineering principles
- Drive capacity planning and performance optimization to ensure platforms remain scalable, fault-tolerant, and cost-effective
- Stay current with technology trends and evaluate new tools and patterns that could improve our platform capabilities and developer experience
Our Current Tech Stack:
- Container & Orchestration: Docker, ECS
- Platform & Tooling: AWS, Terraform, GitHub, GitHub Actions
- Serverless Technologies: Lambda, EventBridge, Step Functions, API Gateway
- Languages: Python, Ruby, JavaScript (React.js, Next.js)
- Data Stores: PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Redis, Snowflake
- Philosophy: We believe in choosing the right tool for the job and encourage exploration of better approaches to building and operating software
The Experience You Bring:
- 5-10 years of experience in platform engineering, site reliability engineering, cloud infrastructure, or related roles building and operating production systems at scale
- Proven experience designing internal developer platforms and self-service tooling that improve developer productivity and reduce operational overhead
- Expert understanding of cloud-native architecture and AWS services (AWS certifications recommended)
- Deep expertise in Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform or equivalent tools, with experience managing complex, multi-environment infrastructure
- Advanced knowledge of CI/CD practices and modern deployment strategies including blue-green deployments, canary releases, and progressive delivery
- Strong experience building distributed, highly available systems with emphasis on fault tolerance, graceful degradation, and failure recovery
- Expertise in containerization and orchestration technologies (Docker, ECS, EKS, or equivalent)
- Advanced understanding of cloud networking including service mesh architectures, API Gateway patterns, service discovery, and network security controls
- Solid understanding of observability practices including metrics, logging, tracing, and SLA/SLO definition
- Experience with security controls and compliance in cloud environments, including IAM, secrets management, and encryption practices
